Katarina Witt started ice skating when she was five. It was not long before her talents became apparent, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered an institution specifically designed for children who have athletic talents. The school was where she got to know Jutta Muller here. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982, when she placed 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. The elegance and grace of Witt drew the attention of the world and she's dominated her sport ever since. Olympic victory At Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female silver medal for figure skating in an extremely close contest. A more competitive contest afterward, she won the gold medal. She did not win the contest for free skating, however, she was awarded gold for her performances during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the first woman to be a repeated winner of figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had a great deal of success as an acting career, however she returned to her sports for competition at the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. The team finished seventh, but she wowed fans despite not winning the medal. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
